Herman Joseph Dayries, Sr. was born to Mary Bridgewater and Lee Dayries on November 2, 1941 in Plaquemine, LA. He was a faithful Catholic; serving as altar boy at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Plaquemine. Herman was a young boy when his father died.  He helped his family by working odd jobs, such as delivering ice. Herman graduated from Iberville High school in 1961 where he enjoyed playing football and was class president. He served in the U.S. Navy and was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Dominican Republic).

In 1961, he met the love of his life, Yvonne Piper. They married on July 27, 1963 in New Orleans. To this union was born five children; a baby boy that was stillborn, Sonjé, Helina, Herman, Jr. and Alyssia.  “Uncle Bo” was a man that enjoyed spending time with family. He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in New Orleans. “Uncle Herman” was a hard worker. Herman retired as a Letter Carrier in 2000 after 35 years of working at the U.S. Postal Service. Upon retirement, he took great pleasure spoiling his grandchildren, running errands for his family, bringing and picking up his grandsons from school, and cooking for his busy preacher wife.

Herman and Yvonne relocated to the Baton Rouge area after Hurricane Katrina. Herman enjoyed spending time visiting friends and family in Plaquemine. He became a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.  After returning to the area, Herman had renewed energy. He organized and became the president of the Iberville High School’s class of 1961 social group. “Paw-Paw” faithfully attended the meetings and gatherings and always looked forward to attending the Iberville High School Round Up.

On March 29, 2017, Herman became our angel in heaven. “Bo” always found his place in life. He served as an historian, a teacher, a driver, a confidant, and a leader. He was compassionate, dependable, friendly, loving, and kind to his family and to everyone that he met. “Daddy” always helped others by giving and sharing his possessions. He would always tell his children to “take care of my grandkids.” He was truthful and had a wonderful sense of humor.  Herman loved cowboy movies, music, horses, football, sports, reading, and telling jokes. “Daddy” was our gentle giant that we loved very much.

He leaves to mourn his wife Rev. Yvonne Dayries; children Sonjé (Albert Bojorquez), Helina (Dr. Gregory Ward), Herman (Keri Stromboe), and Alyssia (Michael Sam); siblings Gloria Robichaux, Gerald Dayries, and Brenda Dayries; sisters-in-law Vicky Dayries, Rhoberta Piper, Dianne Wooden, Mae Piper, Marianne Piper, and Algeria Piper; brothers-in-law Ralph Lagrue, George Piper, and Weldon Piper; and grandchildren Joshua Bojorquez, Christopher Charlot, Derick Sam, Herman Dayries III, Jacob Bojorquez, Thomas Dayries, Lucas Bojorquez, Ethan Bojorquez, Elaina Sam, and Lexa Dayries. Also, survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, send donations to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Clinton, LA to help repair the flood damaged Education Building. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 2004, Baton Rouge, LA 70821.

On Tuesday, April 18, 2017 visitation will begin at 9:30am with mass starting at 10am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Prairieville. Burial will follow at Louisiana National Cemetery in Zachary.

My warmest condolences to Yvonne and the entire Dayries family. While I did not know Herman well, the man I knew was warm, gentle, caring and always inviting. He was very proud of his family and his loving wife. He was someone I admired. His legacy is the great family he leaves behind. May he rest in Heavenly grace.
